Years ago I took time to create several short “videos” that combine still photos and actual videos with sound. The software made use of “The Ken Burns effect,” a type of panning and zooming effect used in video production from still imagery. Presumably introducing “motion” in still photos can make the production feel less like a slide show, putting fewer people to sleep.
Video with sound improves my recall of the event. For example, on a Sunday morning we climbed the Giotto Campanile beside the Florence Duomo. Every fifteen minutes several local churches pealed their bells — such a lovely sound captured on the video.
- The Duomo Square, Florence. Florence Cathedral, Baptistry, Bell Tower, video of Sunday morning bells.
Two other short videos of our stay in Rome:
- Ancient Rome – Vacation Slides 2009. The video portions portray the noise of a street market right outside our hotel window and how windy it can be in Rome. A special treat came from capturing the wedding photographer doing special shots using the Coliseum as the backdrop.
- Saint Peters and Vatican Museums. Not only Saint Peters from atop the dome — great views of Rome from on high, but a quick tour of the Museums and the Sistine Chapel.
On our return trip home, we routed through London and took a week to visit Cornwall. I put together a short photo/video montage of a day we spent in the beach resort town of St. Ives.
- July 2009 Day in St. Ives, UK. Attacked by sea gulls, high winds, roaring seas. All in all it was a lovely day, including a Cream Tea near St. Just on the way back to our hotel in Penzance.
